Electric Guitar or Acoustic Guitar?
The body of the electric guitar is skinnier than the acoustic, making it easier to see your fingers.
Strings are softer on the electric guitar making it beginner friendly to press the strings.
Acoustic guitars are perfectly fine for a 1st year student. If you’re worried the instrument is too big for your student, I can evaluate them on the first day of class or you can buy a 3/4 scale guitar. These are a better size for children.
Curriculum considerations:
1/3rd of the SGT curriculum focuses on guitar solos starting in our 1st year.
Acoustic guitars are welcome in our program, but acoustic guitars are not designed for guitar solos and may restrict your students access to some of our content.
Strings
Often strings on any guitar are old/rusted or just good enough to sell the instrument. I suggest getting the strings replaced with a fresh set of 9 gauge guitar strings. You can bring your guitar to me or any guitar shop for this service.
Buy used or new? How much to spend?
Plan on spending $200 new. I actually love buying used guitars, every guitar I own is used. You can get tremendous value shopping used on guitars.
I recommend shopping online at www.guitarcenter.com and not Facebook Marketplace or KSL.
This is because you will have to be the expert and know what problems to look for on the instrument.
Guitar Center inspects 55 points on the instrument when they bring it into their inventory, and list the condition of the instrument online.
They include photos, a description of the problem if any, and they will ship to you with a 45 day return policy.
You’re welcome to contact me if you’d like a second opinion before purchasing.
What are some good brands?
On www.guitarcenter.com, search:
For smaller 3/4 scale guitars search:
Used Squier Mini
Used Ibanez Mikro
Used Jackson Minion
Fender Sonoran Mini Acoustic
Yamaha JR1 Mini Folk Acoustic
Yamaha JR2 3/4 Scale Folk
Yamaha APXT2 3/4 Thinline
For full size guitars search:
Used Fender Squire Strat
Used Epiphone Special II
Used Jackson Dinky
Used Ibanez Gio
Yamaha Gigmaker Acoustic
Do I need an Amp?
It is nice to have, but not necessary for your first year. This is a great Christmas/Birthday gift and can serve as a great practice incentive.
If you want an amp, the Fender LT25 Mustang is a great value ($170). You can spend a less than this if money is tight.

I recommend practicing a minimum total of 2 hours per week. Break these up into smaller 20-30 minute practice days depending on your child’s attention span and schedule.
To download their homework, students need to access their Team Playercard by logging in to our website www.superguitarteams.com/login.
Never let your child say teacher didn’t give any homework. Students should always have something to do. You and your student can see what is complete and incomplete on their Team Playercard. A typical practice session likes like:
3-5 minute warm-up: Finger exercises (Hill Climb, Fret Jumping, Etc.)
Remaining Time - Practice song fragments and challenges.
Note: Parents can help their child create a routine practice schedule. Developing a routine builds good practice habits and minimizes butting heads over practicing!

Calendar Explained:
Typically, we have about 4 lessons each month. However, uneven months, holidays, and recreation/store closures complicate the calendar. To simplify, think of the year like this:
4 lessons per month x 9 months = 36 total lessons.
Though some months like December are short, these missed lesson days are made up by longer months over the course of the year. This means that tuition will always be $115 per month - even if there are 2 lessons in a month - and greatly simplifies tuition.
